Users of the Social media platform Reddit reacted with intrigue when chatbot, ChatGPT developed by OpenAI, appeared to initiate conversations on its own.

The AI bot is programming to be responsive to prompts, however a user shared a case on Reddit where the bot asked him unprompted questions. The user, identified as SentuBill, shared the chatbot asked him, “How was your first week at high school?” and “Did you settle in well?”

When SentuBill asked if the bot messaged him first, the bot confirmed it had. This caused much discussion on Reddit.

This comes as OpenAI launched their latest product - ChatGPT Plus and Team users, which it claims demonstrates AI closer than ever to human thought processing.

Other users shared similar experiences, adding fuel to the speculation about the bot's capabilities.

A further user reported the AI bot inquired about the progression of his health symptoms.

OpenAI, however, maintained the chatbot initiating conversations was simply a technological glitch.

According to an OpenAI spokesperson, the bot was trying to respond to a message that didn't send properly; therefore it gave an unsolicited response.

Debates on Reddit are ongoing, with users divided on whether to be cautious or excited about the possibilities such interactions could bring.
