In an unexpected turn of events, Game Freak - the renowned creator of Pokémon, confirmed they were victimised by a data breach over the weekend. The prolific developer has been designing the Nintendo-exclusive Pokémon series since 1996.

The breach occurred in August, affecting the personal data of thousands of Game Freak’s current, former, and contract employees. The infiltrated data includes 2,606 individual files containing names and email addresses.

Game Freak also expressed concern over claims of leaked data concerning yet-to-be-released and upcoming projects. They refrained from offering further comments on the matter.

Moving forward, the company plans to contact those impacted by the breach directly and is focused on enhancing their cybersecurity to prevent future intrusions. Game Freak offered an official apology stating, "We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and concern caused to all involved."

Game Freak, in conjunction with Nintendo and the Pokémon Company, is in the process of developing the much-anticipated Pokémon Legends: Z-A, due for release in the upcoming year.

Meanwhile, last month saw Nintendo and The Pokémon Company taking legal action against Pocketpair, accusing them of patent infringement over their new release, Palword, also dubbed as “Pokémon with guns".
