Last week, Australian-based Evolution Mining reported a cyber attack amidst a surge of similar infiltrations targeting firms down under.

Since 2022, Australian firms have been increasingly prone to cyber attacks, shining a spotlight on the nation's insufficiently staffed cybersecurity industry and its readiness to combat such incidents.

To boost their digital fortress, Australia has significantly upped their security game, pouring more resources into law enforcement and mandating companies to report any such breaches. Evolution Mining has informed the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) about the incursion, stating that it's not predicted to affect operational proceedings.

However, the ACSC indicated that Evolution has been scant on sharing information regarding the attack.

Cyber crimes in Australia have skyrocketed by almost 25% in the year ending June 2023, with victims' costs jumping up by 14%, according to a report last November from the ACSC. The Centre also noted that a new defence deal between Australia, the U.S. and Britain has made the island-continent a more appealing target for cyber attackers.

Other businesses such as Optus, Woolworths, Medibank, and Shell's Australian unit have also reported similar security breaches.
